Questions and Answers Have you ever wondered how hypnosis really works? Well read on to get answers to the most frequently asked questions (faq). What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a naturally occurring altered state of consciousness, in which people accept suggestions without making critical judgment. Being ‘lost in thought,’ ‘day dreaming’ and ‘highway hypnosis’ are all euphemisms for being in light hypnotic state of consciousness. During a hypnosis session, the client reaches a deeper state of hypnosis during which the hypnotist can make suggestions that will change the client’s behavior as desired. What does a hypnotist do? Before beginning hypnosis, the hypnotist interviews the client to get a complete understanding of the client’s goals. Or in a stage environment the hypnotist will start by explaining hypnosis to the audience to they and potential volunteers will know what to expect on stage. The hypnotist has been trained to guide clients/volunteers into a deeper state of hypnosis than the ‘day dreaming’ state. From that point the hypnotist delivers suggestions relating to the client’s visit. Who can be hypnotized? Anyone with an open mind, reasonable intelligence and who is able to concentrate can be hypnotized. Some people are more difficult to induce hypnosis than others, but this does not mean that they are less capable of being hypnotized. It merely indicates their resistance for one of many possible reasons (fear of losing control, fear of change, etc.) Once the nature of the resistance is identified and resolved, the client becomes able to experience hypnosis satisfactorily. What does hypnosis feel like? Hypnosis is a feeling of complete mental and physical relaxation. But the client is still awake and aware of what is going on around him/her. The client’s mind is still active. Hypnosis is not sleep and the client will remember what happened during the session. Can I be made to do things I don’t want to under hypnosis? No. You can not be forced to do anything that violates your own personal code of conduct under hypnosis. Hypnosis is a voluntary state of mind that requires the client’s full cooperation. If a suggestion is made that is offensive or disturbing to the client, the client’s mind will reject it. Can I get stuck in hypnosis? No. Even if the hypnotist left the room and failed to bring the client out of hypnosis, after a few minutes of not receiving any stimulation the client would either wake up on his or her own or, if they were tired, drift off into a relaxing sleep and wake up later. What is self-hypnosis? All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. A hypnotist or hypnotherapist simply acts as a trained guide. People can be taught to hypnotize themselves and it is a great tool for practicing self control and pain management. Isn’t hypnosis like brainwashing? Hypnosis is nothing like brainwashing. Hypnosis is a voluntary short term relaxing process. Brainwashing is achieved only by long term mental and physical manipulation, including sleep deprivation, starvation and emotional exhaustion. Will I be unconscious during hypnosis? NO. During hypnosis you are conscious, awake, and very much aware of what is happening around you all the time. You are in full control and must provide your consent for any suggestion to become effective. My clinical hypnosis method is designed to enable you to accomplish positive change in your life. How much does it cost? Clinical sessions for things like stopping smoking, changing eating and exercise habits, reducing stress are charged on a per visit basis. The length of the visits and number of visits suggested will impact how much it will cost. Stage Show costs vary depending on number of people attending, day of the week, how much travel is required, over night accommodations, level of production, whether the performer or venue is providing sound system, lighting, chairs, etc.
